Folding Space
Folding Space was developed by first cutting 277 segments of maple, gluing them together in rings, gluing the rings into cylinders and then turning them on the lathe. The turned cylinders (3-11 inches tall) were then cut both horizontally and vertically and reassembled. The surface was textured using high speed dental drills and pyrography branding irons. The surface was then dyed with USMC black dye and allowed to cure. The inlay of Paua shell was hand-cut into circles from whole shells imported from New Zealand. The sterling silver inlay is 925 sterling and purchased by the troy ounce. The piece is connected using brass eye hooks and vintage grandfather clock chain. Folding Space can be hung on the wall, placed in a circle on a table top, or placed as a runner on a grand piano or dining room table.
